Home / Glossary / Movement

Structural movement

Deformation of a structure from settlement, subsidence, heave, or thermal and moisture change.

The key diagnostic question is not how wide a crack is today but whether it is still moving. Historic movement that has stabilised needs a different response from movement that is active, and only monitoring over time distinguishes them.
