What this page covers

Using this website. It does not govern work we do for you. If you engage us, the terms of that engagement are set out in the written proposal or agreement for that job, and where the two differ, the agreement wins.

The free damp check is a screening tool

This matters more than anything else on this page, so it is stated plainly.

The damp check calculates whether surfaces in a building are likely to be cold enough for mould to grow, from published weather data and the readings you enter, using the method in BS EN ISO 13788. It is a calculation, not an inspection. Nobody has seen your building.

It cannot tell you whether you have a leak, a failed damp proof course, a drainage problem or a structural fault, and it is not a survey, a diagnosis, or advice on which you should spend money. Do not use it as a reason to carry out, or to decide against, remedial work. If the result concerns you, ask for a survey.

Its output depends entirely on the readings you type in. A wrong humidity figure produces a wrong answer, and the tool has no way to know.

Guides and published information

The guides, glossary and insights on this site are general information about buildings. They are written carefully and cited where it matters, but they are about buildings in general, not about yours. No building can be advised on without being seen.

The industry feed links to articles published by other organisations. We do not write them, we do not check them, and linking to one is not agreement with it.

Prices on this site

Published prices are for the scope described alongside them and are a guide, not a quotation. Where a job differs from the scope we will tell you before starting, not afterwards.

Prices are in pounds sterling. Gibraltar does not levy VAT, so the figure shown is the figure payable.

Nothing on this site is an offer capable of acceptance. A binding agreement exists when we have both confirmed the scope and the price in writing.

Sending us a request

When you submit an enquiry or a works request, please describe the work accurately and send photographs that actually show it. We quote from what you send us, and a quotation based on an incomplete description will change once we see the job.

Do not upload photographs containing other people, documents or anything confidential. Please only send images of the building work.

Submitting a request does not oblige us to take the work on, and does not oblige you to accept a quotation.

Independence

We are independent of property sales, contractors and remedial trades, and we are not paid commission by anyone we recommend or appoint. Where we manage works for you, you pay us a fee for managing them and contractor prices are passed through at cost.

Availability

We try to keep the site up and correct, but we do not promise it will always be available or free of errors. Features that depend on other services, such as the weather data behind the damp check, can be unavailable for reasons outside our control.

Liability

Nothing here limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow to be limited. Professional liability for work we carry out is dealt with in the agreement for that work.

Beyond that, and to the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss arising from reliance on general information published on this site, including the damp check and the guides, where no engagement exists between us.
