Spalling

Concrete breaking away as the embedded steel reinforcement corrodes and expands.

Rust occupies more volume than the steel it replaces, so corrosion forces the surrounding concrete off. Signs are flaking concrete, rust-coloured staining, cracking running in straight lines along the reinforcement, and sometimes exposed bars. Accelerated in coastal environments by chloride ingress. It is progressive and structural rather than cosmetic.
