Lime mortar

Traditional permeable mortar that allows moisture movement and evaporation.

Replacing it with cement traps moisture and drives decay into the surrounding masonry, because the mortar can no longer act as the sacrificial, evaporative part of the wall. A common cause of accelerated decay in historic fabric.
