Hygroscopic salts

Salts in masonry that absorb atmospheric moisture, producing damp readings and staining after the original source is gone.

Ground water carries dissolved nitrates and chlorides. As moisture evaporates from a wall face the water leaves but the salts remain, accumulating in the plaster. Because they draw moisture from room air, the wall continues to read and feel damp long after the source is dealt with. Critically, conductivity-type moisture meters respond to these salts, so a contaminated wall reads high when it is dry.
